Deputy Minister for Political Affairs Yeo Seung Bae Visits Libya

1. Deputy Minister for Political Affairs Yeo Seung Bae visited Libya on October 31-November 2, where he met with high-level Libyan officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Ramadan Ahmad Abu Janah, Deputy Foreign Minister Mohamed Khalil Issa, Deputy Interior Minister Bashir Al-Amin and Chairman of the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) Weam Fathi Al-Abdali, and they had extensive consultations on ways for enhancing the Korea-Libya relations.

 

Meanwhile, the Libyan officials welcomed the Korean delegation’s visit to Libya as a positive signal to the Libyan people and the international community including its neighboring countries. 

 

2. Deputy Minister Yeo took note of the cooperative relations between the two countries that have continued in the recent difficult times through various ways such as Korea’s humanitarian aid to Libya for responding to COVID-19, and stressed that Korea has been taking part in the international community’s efforts for Libya’s stability and development by successfully holding Libyan presidential and parliamentary elections as scheduled at the end of the year.

 

The Libyan side expressed its gratitude for Korea’s assistance including offering COVID-19 products and supporting the Korean-Libyan Vocational Training Centre, and explained preparations for the elections and its relevant efforts for the enhancement of security in Libya.

 

3. Regarding Korean companies’ participation in the power plant projects in Libya, Deputy Minister Yeo asked for the Libyan government’s interest and support for the safety of the Korean people in Libya, and also hoped that Korean companies would participate more actively in various reconstruction projects in the country as Libya gets stabilized in the future.

 

The Libyan side welcomed Korean companies’ resumption of their activities in Libya and affirmed that it would spare no effort to ensure the safety of the Korean people and companies.

 

4. Meanwhile, Deputy Minister Yeo invited Libyan Foreign Minister to both the 2021 Seoul UN Peacekeeping Ministerial on December 7-8 and the 5th Korea-Africa Forum on December 9-10, while requesting Libya’s support for Korea’s bid to host the 2030 World Expo in Busan.

 

5. In addition, Deputy Minister Yeo explained the situation on the Korean Peninsula and the Libyan side expressed its support for the Korean government’s efforts to build peace and stability.

 

6. Deputy Minister Yeo’s visit to Libya served as an opportunity to lay the groundwork for resuming high-level exchanges and explore ways to strengthen cooperation between the two countries going forward.
